What is a Resolver?

A Resolver is an electromagnetic sensor used to measure the angular displacement and angular velocity of rotating objects. The resolver consists of a stator and a rotor, with the rotor usually fixed to the motor shaft and rotating synchronously.

How does the Resolver Work?

Analogous to the principle of a conventional resolver, the stator winding of the Resolver acts as the primary side of the resolver, receiving an excitation voltage. The rotor winding acts as the secondary side, obtaining an induced voltage through electrical coupling and magnetic resonance. The output voltage amplitude of the rotor winding is related to the sine and cosine functions of the rotor's angle, as shown in Figure 3. By converting the output signal to a digital format and calculating the arctan value, the current angular displacement of the rotor can be obtained, and the derivative of angular displacement over time gives the speed.

What are the Typical Applications of Resolvers?

Due to the absence of electronic components inside, resolvers can adapt well to high-temperature, dust, high-speed, and high-vibration working environments. This also gives resolvers a longer service life compared to other sensors.

The characteristics of resolvers make them one of the most ideal sensors in industrial and automotive applications. In industrial applications, resolvers are widely used in servo control systems (such as elevators), industrial robots, AC variable frequency drives, plastic molding systems, textile systems, and metallurgical systems. In automotive applications, resolvers are widely used in traction inverters for electric and hybrid vehicles, HVAC systems, start-stop generators, and power steering systems, among others.
